Family Literacy: Enjoying Language Together

This set of resources was developed as part of the Family Literacy project, a cooperative project between the Landesinstitut für Lehrerbildung und Schulentwicklung and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. The project forms part of the model programme „Promotion of Children and Young People from Migrant Backgrounds” (FörMig) run by the Federal-Laender Commission for Educational Planning and the Promotion of Research (BLK).
This book provides a range of family learning resources for family learning activities, all of which have been tested in genuine practice. Resources include activities related to reading aloud, writing, talking/storytelling, suggestions for encouraging phonological awareness, self-evaluation of work done, etc. The report also provides a great deal of practical information in relation to the approaches to be adopted and suggestions related to getting parents involved, developing an organisational framework, planning and evaluating, etc. The family learning approach utilised in this resource is based on three key principles, similar to family learning principles identified in many other resources – active involvement of parents in teaching, working with parents in parallel to the teaching, joint out-of-school activities.
